This unique wooden egg fermentation vessel was hand-crafted by the master cooper at Taransaud in France. It has a capacity of 20 hectoliters, which is roughly 528 gallons.
From the Taransaud website:
“Designed by our teams in 2010, OVUM is the first-ever wooden egg-shaped barrel and is a real technical achievement. It was born from the challenge given by our client Champagne Marguet, truly inspired by the golden ratio. With a capacity of 20 hl, OVUM is an atypical product, much sought-after for its original shape and the oenological advantages of natural convection of lees. The hoop-free tightening system, an original patented Taransaud assembly technique, reveals the purity of its shape.”
